With the expected take of more than $100 million in it's first weekend, it's no wonder that the Star Wars franchise has easily spread to the video game arena. With millions of fans who seemingly can't get enough of George Lucas's fantastic world, shelves of game stores are peppered with all different types of Star Wars games. From first person shooters, to real-time action strategy, almost every genre of game has been touched by the Force. Below is a brief history of some of the Star Wars games that have been available for the PC.
X-wing This combat flight simulator was the first Star Wars game to hit the PC game market back in 1993. In this game, you are a rookie pilot for the rebellion hoping to restore peace through out the galaxy. Your missions fly you through space in your starfighter, doing battle against the Empires best ships--which include Tie fighters, Tie Bombers and even Super Star Destroyers. This game is a classic, good in it's day, but now that it's old, it is difficult to find. Other "sequals" such as Tie Fighter and X-Wing vs. Tie Fighter have much better graphics, sound, and overall game-play. Nonetheless, avid fans might just want this to add X-wing to their a collection.
Dark Forces With the release of Doom and other first person shooters, Lucas Arts soon followed with their release of Dark Forces. Playing a Jedi trainee, you are a member of the Rebel Alliance's covert operations division. This game, as with older PC games, doesn't have state-of-the-art graphics, but the two sequals to this (Jedi Knight: Dark Forces 2 and the newly released Jedi Knight 2: Jedi Outcast) have cutting-edge game-play.
Galactic Battlegrounds Real time strategy action games such as Command & Conqueor, and Age of Empires, are enorumusouly popular; Galactic Battle grounds is no exception. Built using the same game engine as Age of Empires 2, you pick one of six Star Wars civilizations: the Galactic Empire, Rebel Alliance, Wookiees, Gungans, Royal Naboo, and Trade Federation. Like AOE2, you guide your civ through the different ages gaining new technologies and units to do battle with. Online multi player games are just as good as those for AOE2, and the new Clones expansion adds more civilizations, units, and technologies.
There are many popular games that can be added to the list above: Rogue Leader, Rebellion, Rebel Assault II. The games above, however, stand out as the 3 defining titles for the Star Wars universe of computer action games, that span all computer game genres. With the release of the latest movie, Episode II: Attack of the Clones, new computer games are being release too, so you'll be sure to continue your Star Wars computer action adventures for a long time to come.
