Far Cry 2 is a first person shooter set in which players take on the role of a mercenary sent to eliminate a mysterious arms dealer named "The Jackel" before his actions plunge the fictional Africian region into war. Far Cry 2 has a non-linear sandbox style game-play in which a player's actions can greatly affect the outcome of the game. Players are allowed to align with anyone they choose and can even play one faction off of another in order to succeed in the game's overall objective of taking out "The Jackel".

Although the title may suggest it, Far Cry 2 is not a sequel to the original Far Cry. In fact other than the title, it has nothing to do with the Far Cry at all. While Far Cry was developed by Crytek and published by Ubisoft, Far Cry 2 was entirely developed by Ubisoft Montreal. In it, players will be allowed to choose from one one of nine different mercenaries to play, none of which are Jack Carver, the hero from Far Cry. Far Cry 2 also move away from the sci-fi angle, taking a more realistic story backdrop of fictional region of Africa that is in the midst of civil war.
