From Guide - Gothic II begins where the original Gothic ends, the sequel has plenty of information on the first game in case you haven't played it. Gothic II picks up the story with the war against the orcs in it's climax and also in the midst of a peasant uprising. With danger at every turn it becomes your decision whether to remain loyal to the King and his henchmen or take the side of the peasants.
The game development and storyline depends very heavily on your choices with nearly every decision having some sort of impact on the game. This open game-play style allows you the freedom to choose the path that you see fit whether it be a dragon slayer or a paladain the choice is yours. The character generation does not occur before you start, rather you must search for instructors who are willing to train you in the discipline that you choose.
Gothic II is a living world where other characters are tending to their own affairs, and a world that allows you to pretty much do whatever you like... if you can handle the consequences of your actions.
