Mass Effect is an sci-fi action role playing game from Bioware set in the year 2183. Through the discovery of ancient extinct race called the Protheans, mankind has been able to become technologically advanced enough to travel beyond our own solar system and explore the vast universe.
Players take on the role of Commander Shepared who is the 2nd in command of the space ship Normandy. The game opens with the Normandy being sent on a mission to retrieve an ancient Prothean artifact from a human colony on an alien planet. Upon arrival the crew of the Normandy find the humans under attack by aliens called the Geth.
There are six character classes in Mass Effect each with unique talents and abilities. Characters gain new abilities as the gain experience and level up. Players can also choose what type of background their character will have which can have some slight impact during game play.
