Heroes of Might & Magic V Review (PC)

About.com Rating 3.5

One final aspect of combat that seems out of place is the fact that you can find out the result of your battle before the onscreen animation takes place. Looking at the bottom of the screen before a combat round has taken place the initiative bar will flash the number of remaining units, giving you the results of the confrontation before any combat occurs!

Multiplayer

Multiplayer gaming for any turn based strategy game can be a tedious undertaking, Civ IV does a good job with it's email notifications but overall there aren't too many games that do it well. With three different multiplayer options, Hot Seat, LAN, or UBI.com, Heroes of Might & Magic V is no exception. The Hot Seat multiplayer mode is played on a single PC, with each player having a unique color and taking turns moving their hero and controlling units in battle. LAN and UBI.com modes come with numerous connection issues and offer free for all and team play modes.

Bottom Line

Many hardcore Heroes of Might & Magic will pick up this title just because it's a Heroes game, but out of the box the game feels somewhat unfinished. Minor bugs and glitches plague many parts of the game and the lack of a map editor leaves a gaping how. This is quite disappointing considering the fact that the map/scenario editor were a vital part of the success of the previous Heroes titles.

However, Heroes of Might & Magic V does have a lot of great qualities that make it a fun and engaging game. The new 3D graphics look terrific and the tried and true turn based gameplay/combat of previous Heroes of Might Magic games is faithfully continued here. Time will tell if most of the problems and "missing" aspects are addressed in patches and upgrades.
