Gun Review

About.com Rating 3

By Michael Klappenbach, About.com

The horseback riding and combat on horseback is a done quite well in Gun and is a lot of fun. These fast paced sequences will have you trampling your enemies as well as firing rifles, pistols, arrows and more. Using Colton's spurs you can make your horse run faster in order to out run or catch up to your enemies. One must be careful to keep an eye on the horse's stamina so as not to tire him out.

There's a nice variety of weapons available in Gun including pistols, rifles, shotguns, knives, TNT, bows and sharpshooters, which are long range rifles with a very slow rate of fire. As Colton is awarded new more powerful weapons after each mission, you can expect more powerful enemies. There are also opportunities to upgrade weapons and abilities by spending money in local shops.

Audio & Graphics

Gun features a first class cast and some great voice acting from the likes of Kris Kristofferson, Lance Henriksen, Ron Perlman, Tom Skerritt and more. These actors bring life to the characters and drive the story with realistic conversations and dialog throughout the game. The sound affects of weapons, horseback riding and the surroundings in environments are very good as well.

If there's one obvious disappointment from the opening scene, it is Gun's graphics and environments. The characters models are the one highlight with very detailed features, but character movement can be unrealistic and choppy. As for the game's environments, it feels as though Neversoft traded detail for size. The environments are big, but on top of not having adequate amount of side missions and encounters, they lack the intricate detail found in many shooters today.

Animation sequences during cut scenes look relatively good when compared with the environments and choppy movements of the characters during combat. The cut scenes can become tiresome after a while and unfortunately can't always be skipped over by pressing the Esc key.

Bottom Line

If you're looking for a simple, straightforward game with a good story line then look no further than Gun. The superior voice acting and the short storyline gives you enough flexibility to keep this game entertaining in the midst of some game play flaws and average graphics. Gun also provides a nice change of pace from all the Sci-Fi, Military Action, and World War 2 shooters.
