Everyone loves a good scare now and then. Scary video games have become increasingly popular over the past few years as graphics and visuals have become more realistic. There are hundreds of great PC games that will give you a good jump, but the games in my top scary games list should give you the frights from start to finish. So forget seeing this week's B horror movie...turn off the lights, turn up the volume and try playing one of these horrifying PC games instead!

1. Left 4 Dead

Released: 2008
Left 4 Dead is a co-op multiplayer first person shooter that tells the story of four survivors in a post-apocalyptic world with each player taking on the role of one of these survivors. The world has been in the grips of a pandemic that has transformed the infected into mutated zombie type creatures.

2. BioShock

Released: 2007
With stunning visuals BioShock is one of the best looking and spookiest games to hit the PC in the past couple years. Although technically not "survival horror" game in the traditional sense, the eerie soundtrack and whispered conversations in the underwater utopia of Rapture will have you looking over your shoulder more than once.

3. F.E.A.R.

After more than 2 years in release the spine-tingling tension of F.E.A.R. puts it near the top of the list of the most scary games. 4. Indigo Prophecy

Known as Fahrenheit in Europe, Indigo Prophecy, like F.E.A.R. has a mysterious supernatural story line. As story begins you find yourself standing over a dead body with a bloody knife. Possession, an ancient prophecy and the fate of humankind hang in the balance as you try to uncover what behind all of the supernatural events occurring around you.

5. S.T.A.L.K.E.R. Shadow of Chernobyl

S.T.A.L.K.E.R. Shadow of Chernobyl is set in the aftermath of the nuclear disaster at Chernobyl in the Ukraine. After a fictional second explosion at Chernobyl, the land surrounding the nuclear plant has become a wasteland know as the Zone, where mutant creatures and humans roam and the laws of nature no longer apply.

6. Doom 3

If you're looking to get scared around Halloween, Doom 3 will more that satisfy. The non stop action as you fight the demonic invasion of Mars will keep you on the edge of your seat. The expansion pack Resurrection of Evil continues the scary encounters, picking up the storyline two years after the Doom 3 storyline.

7. Half-Life 2 - The Orange Box

With humanity sold out to alien forces it is your job to escape and lead the resistance. Although not much of a horror game, the storyline's tension, twists and turns make it one of those thrillers that will not soon be forgotten.

8. Alone in the Dark

Released: 2008
The latest chapter in the Alone in the Dark series will have to running for the light switch. Players assume the role of the Alone in the Dark series protaganist, Edward Carnby as he investigates supernatural occurances in New York's Central Park and the mysterious tunnels found below.

9. Cold Fear

A team of covert agents has been slaughtered by an unknown threat while investigating a Russian whale ship in the Bering Sea. It's your job to find to investigate and find the truth behind the mysterious ship. If the setting of Cold Fear isn't chilling enough for you, the creatures now occupying the ship and their deranged experiments should do the trick.

10. System Shock 2

Released: 1999
System Shock 2 was released nearly 10 years ago but is still one of the best sci-fi survival horror games. Set in the year 2114, players awake from a cryo-sleep on the space craft Von Braun to find they are the lone survivor. Players then set out to uncover the mysterious and what has gone wrong on the Von Braun.
