2004 was the year all promises were finally delivered, the year of the first person shooter. With the release of Doom 3 and Half-Life 2, both after countless delays, as well as surprising hits such as Far Cry, Painkiller and The Chronicles of Riddick, PC game industry has life again. These titles have raised the bar in game-play and appearance on what has been a banner year for the PC gaming industry.
The most anticipated game of the year has now become the game of the year. With an excellent storyline and unmatched graphics, Half-Life 2 has become an instant classic.
If there were ever a threat to Everquest’s dominance in the MMORPG market, here it is. World of Warcraft has such variety in all aspects of game play character creation, combat, adventuring it’s hard to find any flaws. This truly is the only MMORPG you should be playing.
The graphics for Doom 3 are superb, the action, sound, atmosphere and effects are all second to none. The lack storyline unfortunately, is the one thing missing that keeps this game from being higher on the list. (although #3 is not too shabby)
Over the years we’ve watched the Total War series get better and better. The rendering of battles involving tens of thousands of men is amazing and the attention to detail remarkable. Rome Total War also has terrific sound effects and music to go along with it’s visual effects.
Far cry is one of 3 titles(#6 & #8) this year that seemed to come out of no where, a great storyline and very good graphics made it one of my favorites this year. The single player game is very solid, which can be very difficult at times.
The Chronicles of Riddick Escape from Butcher Bay was the biggest surprise to me this year. Usually movie based games are very disappointing and never live up to the billing, but with Riddick maybe that trend will change. It includes a solid story with intense combat, stealth and very good graphics.
With 10 multiplayer game modes UT2004 set a new standard for combat multiplayer games with it’s variety and excellent graphics.
The final game pre-Doom 3/Half-Life 2 first person game on the list which seemed to sneak up on everyone. The rich graphics and simple plot are the charm of this game and turned this sleeper out of Poland, into a hit.
This MMORPG contains excellent character creation allowing you to begin with some powerful skills, custom made superheroes for the large scale action packed battles as you try to rid the city of evil organizations.
Sid Meier's Pirates is a terrific remake and upgrade of the classic Pirates! PC game. With easy to learn interface and an open-ended career path as a pirate should make it enjoyable for all.
