1. Grand Theft Auto

The game that started one of the best selling video game franchises is available as freeware. The original Grand Theft Auto looks nothing like the current formats of the game but that doesn't make it any less fun to play. It is available for free download directly from Rockstar Games.

2. Grand Theft Auto 2

The second chapter in the Grand Theft Auto series of games, Grand Theft Auto II is also available as freeware directly from Rockstar Games. It has been slightly modified from the original release so it is now compatible with XP and Vista.

3. Super Mario XP

The classic Super Mario games don't need much explanation. Super Mario XP is the first non-retail release on the list of most popular free games and it is by far the best Super Mario remake available on the PC. Doom 95 is the updated windows version of the classic first person shooter from id Software. Unfortunately Doom is no longer readily available as a freeware download although there are links that offer the shareware version.

6. Icy Tower

Icy Tower is probably one of the most additive games I've ever played. The objective is quite simple, jump from one floor to the next for as many points as possible. Bonus points are awarded when Harold the Homeboy skips one or more floors with a combo jump that include bouncing off the walls and flips.

7. Prince of Persia 4D

Prince of Persia 4D is an unofficial remake of the original class DOS PC game from the early 1990s. The overall game play is more challenging with harder levels and is perfect to fans of the series. The game is just as fun to play as it was nearly 20 years ago.

8. Command & Conquer: Red Alert

Red Alert is the prequel to the original Command & Conquer and takes place in alternative/parallel timeline in which World War II never occured. Instead the Soviet Union rises to power and draws the free world into an alternative World War II.

Duke Nukem 3D is a first person shooter set in a futuristic Los Angeles in which players take on the role of Duke Nukem as they battle aliens through 28 levels. The game's engine was release as freeware and has spawned many ports and clones that are available for free download.
