While it's true that many of the best platformers never seem to make it over to the PC, there are plenty of original homebrew and classic remakes that show the genre does have a life on the PC. The list of top platformers for the PC that follows details just a few of my favorites.
Super Mario 3 Mario Forever is a remake of the original Nintendo classic. There are literally hundreds of Super Mario remakes out there and this one is easily the best that I've seen. Graphics and game-play are top-notch and virtually identical to the original. If you're looking for more Mario fun then you'll want to give this one a try.
2. Cave Story
Cave Story is an original freeware platformer in which players are on a quest to escape from a cave. The game is loaded with weapons, gadgets and powerups to help you with enemies and each level's boss fight. There are a total of nine different weapons, gadgets such as a jet pack and life capusles and powerups such as health and energy.
3. Icy Tower
Icy Tower is probably one of the most additive games I've ever played. The objective is quite simple, jump from one floor to the next for as many points as possible. Bonus points are awarded when Harold the Homeboy skips one or more floors with a combo jump that include bouncing off the walls and flips. The more consectutive combo jumps you perform the more bonus points you'll be awarded. After it's all done, save your game and upload it to the fan site to see how you compare with the rest of the world.
N is a slick looking (and award winning) freeware platformer in which you control a tiny ninja stick man trying to collect as much gold as quickly as you can. Each screen contains platforms, springs, curved walls and obstacles which you must use or avoid to grab the gold and make it through the door to the next level.
Here's another great remake of an Nintendo Classic. Castlevania Quest is a clone of the original NES Version and game play is a spot on match with all the levels, monsters and boss fights found in the original.
6. Bio Menace
Originally released in 1993 Bio Menace is a side scrolling platformer action game in which you take on the role of CIA agent, Snake Logan. Mutants have overrun Metro City and it's your job to destroy and find the source of these mutants. The game features old EGA graphics that look good for when the game was developed, it also utilizes an early game engine designed by Id Software. There are plenty of levels, powerups and mutants to keep you busy in this action filled game.
Jetpack is a freeware platformer that was originally released back in 1993. In the game players fly around with their jetpacks on collecing green emeralds scattered throughout each level. Once all of the emeralds have been collected you'll be able to advance to the next screen. Not as easy as it sounds though as there are obstacles and challenges that stand in your way. In addition to having a jetpack, you'll also be equiped with a phase shiter that allows you to get through some walls.
If you're looking for some old time Super Mario fun then look no further than Super Mario XP. It is one of the more fun and entertaining remakes of any Super Mario game, having the same look and feel of the Nintendo classic.
10. CHAMP Kong
CHAMP Kong is a great remake of Nintendo’s classic Donkey Kong game. Your girlfriend has been kidnapped by a lovesick ape named Kong, and he’s taken her to the top of a dangerous construction site. It's up to you to avoid barrels and fire balls as you run, jump and climb up ladders to be reunited with your girlfriend. However once you reach the top, Kong grabs the gear and takes her to another level.
